Many girls and women want breast implants because they believe it will improve their self-esteem. It is true that cosmetic surgery can help a person feel better about the body part that was “fixed,” whether it is a breast, a nose, ears, or thighs. But research shows that breast implants do NOT improve self-esteem. In fact, several studies show that breast implants LOWER self-esteem even if it makes a woman feel sexier. If you don’t feel good about yourself or how you look, talk to a counselor or therapist instead of — or before — talking to a plastic surgeon.
Attention Grabbers
While many girls and women get implants to make themselves stand out more, you may not like the attention as much as you think. Guys may stare at your chest instead of looking at your face when they talk to you, and your girlfriends may be uncomfortable and awkward about your new breasts as well. Several celebrities have spoken about feeling like their breasts entered a room before they did. It may be hard to ignore their stares and comments.
Also, keep in mind that you will have to buy new clothes to fit your new body. While this may sound exciting, it can be even more challenging for a thin or average weight girl or woman to find clothes that fit bigger breasts as it was to find clothes that fit smaller breasts.
More Surgeries
If you decide to color your hair, you will have to do something when your old hair color grows in. For hair, you can go back to your old hair color easily, by dying your hair the old color.
You can’t reverse breast implant surgery so easily. Although breast implants usually last at least 7-10 years, they can cause problems much sooner than that. If one breast starts looking much different than the other, or if you have a more serious problem, you will probably need another surgery, and that will be expensive.
If you’re very happy with your breast implants, you will probably need to have surgery to replace your implants at least every 10 years. If you don’t like your implants, it costs more to have them removed than the breast augmentation surgery cost. In addition to removal, you would want a breast lift to try to make your breasts look as good as they did before you got implants.
This photo is a 29-year old woman whose breast implants were so painful she had to get them removed. She will need an expensive breast lift if she wants her breasts to look as good as they did before she got her implants.
Implants will affect you forever
Whether you are happy or unhappy with your implants, implants will affect you forever. You may know someone who loves their breast implants, but just keep in mind that they don’t work out for everyone. Seriously think about if you can afford to have another surgery if you need one, and whether you want this kind of drastic change in your life, throughout your entire life. Immediate results are usually positive, but it’s important to remember that this decision will be with you forever, so choose wisely.
